Bahan bacaan mengenai Sufi memang banyak. Bukan sahaja kitab dalam bahasa Melayu malah dalam bahasa Inggeris dihasilkan oleh pengkaji Barat. Buku oleh orang Barat pula lebih mudah diperolehi kerana telah sedia untuk dimuat turun dalam talian melalui internet. Ada sesetengahnya boleh dapat percuma tanpa sebarang bayaran. Buku "Sufism The Formative Period" oleh Ahmed T Karamustafa adalah satu contoh yang boleh di muat turun secara percuma.

Sufism: The Formative Period (2007)

Berikut adalah pengenalan mengenai Sufism yang dipetik dari buku tulisan Karamustafa (buku beliau sebenarnya lebih memfokus kepada para tokoh Sufi di Baghdad);

"Sufism, the major mystical tradition in Islam, emerged from within renunciatory modes of piety (zuhd) during a period that extended from the last decades of the second/eight to the beginning of the fourth/tenth century. The earliest mystical approaches appeared in the first of this period, but these were likely disparate and heterogeneous in nature and, more significantly, they remain obscure to modern researchers owing to sparse documentation. From the mid-third/ninth century onwards, however, Sufis of Baghdad came into full view as members of a distinct mode of mystical piety. In the same period, other mystical movements took shape elsewhere, notably in lower Iraq, northeastern Iran, and Central Asia. Mystics who belong to these latter movements were not initially known as Sufis, and in their thought and practice, they differed from Baghdad Sufis and from each other in many ways, but they gradually blended with the Baghdad mystics, and in time, like them, they too came to be indentified as Sufis".

Para tokoh Sufi sering mendapat kecaman dan antara tuduhan yang banyak diperkata adalah penyelewengan akidah. Al-Arabi adalah antara tokoh Sufi yang banyak diperkata dengan tuduhan oleh para pengkaji dan beliau turut mendapat kecaman hebat termasuk oleh Ibnu Taimiyah. Namun menurut buku tulisan Prof Zakaria Stapa para tokoh Sufi ortodoks seperti al-Arabi sebenarnya langsung tidak kena mengena dengan sebarang penyelewengan akidah. Beliau juga menegaskan bahawa kecaman terhadap al-Arabi oleh Ibnu Taimiyah sebenarnya terhasil dari kekeliruan beliau dalam memahami keseluruhan pemikiran al-Arabi.

Prof Zakaria juga menegaskan tuduhan Pantheism terhadap al-Arabi sepatutnya tidak timbul.
