Professor Patricia Crone (dari Princeton University) menulis sebuah buku "Meccan Trade and the rise of Islam". Buku tersebut telah diterbitkan oleh dua penerbit. Kali pertama oleh Princeton University Press pada 1987 dan ulang terbit oleh Gorgias Press pada 2004.

Buku Meccan Trade oleh Crone sering dirujuk oleh para pengkaji khususnya oleh pengkaji Barat. Baca suatu catatan mengenai buku Crone ini di sebuah blog. Sebuah artikel yang terdapat di laman  islamawareness telah cuba menyangkal apa yang ditulis oleh Crone. Artikel tersebut berjudul "Arabia without spices: An alternate hypothesis" tulisan Gene W Heck. Terkini Crone menerbitkan sebuah artikel "Quraysh and the Roman Army: Making sense the Meccan leather trade". Tulisan beliau di terbitkan dalam Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies (Vol. 70, 2007). Baca mengenai buku-buku lain yang ditulis oleh Crone di sini.

Abstrak artikel tersebut menyebut "This paper argues that the trade in leather and other pastoralist products, which  the tradition ascribes to the Meccan, could make sense on the assumptions that the goods were destined for the Roman army, which is known to have required colossal quantities of leather and hides for its equipment. The hypothesis that the Meccans were servicing the Roman military is examined and found to be impossible to prove in our current state of knowledge; it is at least compatible with the evidence, however, and also highly promising in terms the light it could throw on the political aspects of the rise of Islam".
